“One thought alone preoccupies the submerged mind of Empire: how not to end, how not to die, how to prolong its era. By day, it pursues its enemies. It is cunning and ruthless, it sends its bloodhounds everywhere. By night, it feeds on images of disaster: the sack of cities, the rape of populations, pyramids of bones, acres of desolation. A mad vision, yet a virulent one.”
-JM Coetzee, Waiting for the Barbarians
This started as a companion to this pic of the Allies! The Tripartite Pact, which formally established the Axis Powers, was signed on 27th September 1940. Like Italy and Germany, Japan too had an ultranationalist, militant form of government that was pretty much fascist- Imperial Japan aimed to create a “Greater East-Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere”, which was ostensibly an Asian brotherhood free from Western colonialism. In reality, Japanese rule was brutal- the occupied asian countries faced forced labour and prostitution, and were treated extremely cruelly by the Kempeitai- the secret police. Like Mengele, the Japanese experimented on POWs. There were also concentration camps in Italy and Italian colonies like Libya. Also, it’s interesting to note that fascism originated in Italy as a coherent political ideology.
I guess the key here is that I want to point out how utterly monstrous these regimes were- and I feel that sometimes there is so much focus on Nazi Germany in modern consciousness that the role of Italy and Japan gets forgotten or fades into the background- when they did terrible things too. This is kind of sensitive, and so I wanna emphasise that when I doodle dark hetalia, I do it with the idea that nations are simply like humans- not wholly good or bad: capable of great kindness but also horrific atrocities at other points in their history.
